I started DutiDeals because of a bottle of whisky I could have bought twice on the same trip, but somehow managed to miss both times.
The bottle I missed
My brother and I share a love for whisky, though he's considerably more obsessed than I am. He's the kind of collector who hunts down incredibly rare bottles at auctions — think World War II-era whiskies or a Glenfiddich from the 1960s. So naturally, he's my go-to person whenever I'm looking to buy something new.
On a flight from Seattle to Bangalore via Dubai, I called him before leaving Seattle to ask for a recommendation. He suggested Jack Daniel's Single Barrel. I checked the price at the Seattle airport, thought it was a little expensive, and decided I'd pick it up at Bangalore duty free instead.
I spotted the same bottle in Dubai, but decided to wait again. Surely, Bangalore would have it.
Except it didn't. The shop didn't stock it, and apparently never had.
Two opportunities, two airports, one missed bottle. And a rather disappointed whisky enthusiast.
Why I built DutiDeals
That experience got me thinking: how many travellers end up doing the same thing?
Buying duty free is surprisingly unplanned. We rarely know which airport has what, where we'll get the best price, or whether it's smarter to buy something at our departure airport or wait until the next stop.
I thought there should be an easier way.
That's why I built DutiDeals — a simple way to plan your duty free purchases before you travel. Just enter your route in our route planner and compare the products and prices available at the airports along the way.
Today, DutiDeals covers whiskies, wines and fragrances across 52 airports in 21 countries, helping travellers make more informed buying decisions.
Hopefully, you'll never have to miss the same bottle twice.
